Wild Lights at the Detroit Zoo

Opening night for the Wild Lights at the Detroit Zoo was cold.  We had a jammed packed day and the kids were overtired.  That being said, we still enjoyed ourselves. We walked along the half mile trail in the front of the zoo stopping along the way to enjoy some of the activities.   Over two million lights create a  dazzling display by illuminating trees, buildings and structures.  There were stars, flowers, animals, trees, tunnels and so much more.  The path was beautifully lit up and there was something to see every step along the way.

Various activities are spread out along the half mile path around the front part of the zoo.  You can listen to carolers, enjoy refreshments, do some shopping, warm yourself by the fire or watch the “Frost’s Follies”.

Some of the buildings remain open during this event including the River Otter Habitat (just a warm place to stand), the Holden Reptile Conservation Center (all the animals are on display plus you decorate a yummy cookie),  and The Ford Education Center.

The Ford Education  Center is jammed packed with activities including:

  • The Polar Express 4-D Experience (additional fee)
  • Happy Feet: Mumble’s Wild Ride (additional fee)
  • Lego City and Train Display
  • Ice Carving (right outside the exit)
  • Photos with Santa – sitting with Santa is free, photos cost extra
  • Santa’s Toy Box Gift Shop
  • Winter Story Time

There were also a few opportunities to meet some of the costumed animals and characters along the path.  The characters were super friendly and posed for pictures for us a couple of time.

Rosa (age 4) really had a good time, while Carlyn (age 16 months) didn’t seem to care.  My mom and her friend went along with us and they also had a grand time.

If you are planning to visit with just adults, you might want to consider the Holiday Cheer experience, on December 12th.  It’s a 21 and over event complete with holiday spirits.

More info about the Wild Lights including dates, times and ticket are available on their website:

Metro Detroit Mommy and one lucky fan received tickets to this even in exchange for this promotional post.
