Outdoor Winter Activities at Stony Creek Metropark in Shelby Township

While the main winter attraction for families is sledding at Stony Creek Metropark, the park also offers snowboarding, cross county skiing, biking and ice skating.

Stony Creek Metropark is part of the Huron-Clinton Metropark system which is comprised of thirteen parks across southeast Michigan. Most of the park is located in Washington Township as well as Oakland Township, with a small portion and entrance in Shelby Township. In addition to amazing summertime activities at Eastwood Beach, this 4,461-acre park hosts plenty of winter activities.

The park is located at 4300 Main Park Road, Shelby Township. The park is mostly on the north side of 26 Mile Road, west of Mound Road. Winter activities at Stony Creek Metropark take place from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. However, the gate closes at 7 p.m. Daily fees are $10 per vehicle, or you can get an annual vehicle pass for $40 if you are a resident of Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw or Wayne County.

Sledding is available at two areas within Stony Creek. Families can enjoy sledding at either the West Branch or Gladeview sledding areas.

The Gladeview section offers not only a sledding hill (Gladeview B), but also a snowboarding area (Gladeview A). There is also a restroom (open throughout the year) and picnic areas nearby. The sledding area offers a nice slope with a clear space marked off to return to the top of the hill safely. Compared to West Branch, Gladeview is bigger, steeper as well as wider. The slopes allow for more sledders and less wait time. Finally, West Branch is closer to the park entrance and located just beyond the Trolley Trails.

West Branch Picnic Area also offers a sledding area. It is smaller and great for younger children. It also tends to not be as busy as the bigger hill. There area also winter restrooms and a picnic area nearby.

Cross Country Skiing at Stony Creek Metropark

Stony Creek offers several more than 13 miles of marked and groomed trails for walking snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. The trails range in difficulty from easy to most difficult. The Trolley Trails offer ungroomed pathways near the entrance. Cross-Country Ski Rentals are available during the weekends only.

Mountain/Fat Tire Biking

During the winter months the Mountain Biking trails on the West Branch trails system are converted to groomed cross-country ski trails. Therefore they are closed for biking and hiking. However, Fat Tire Mountain Biking is offered on the Trolley Trails each winter. The trails are across from Eastwood Beach, near the entrance.

More Outdoor Winter Activities at Stony Creek Metropark

In addition to sledding, snowboards, cross-country-skiing and biking, the park offers ice fishing and ice skating. Both activities take place on the lake and therefore require the lake to frozen. The ice skating rink is located on Stony Creek Lake, close the boat launch area. Guests can use the warming room which hosts a heated lobby as well as restrooms. Hockey is allowed in designated areas next to the large general skating rink. The park does not offer skate rentals.

 In the winter, snowkiting is available at Eastwood beach near the Day Sail Area. Guests can use skis or snowboards, glide through the snow and ice on the lake.
