If you’re looking for a unique indoor experience in Metro Detroit that feels both calming and family-friendly, Salinair Salt Room Spa in Rochester Hills offers a wellness-focused outing unlike your typical activity with kids.
Known for its halotherapy, also called dry salt therapy, the space combines relaxation, respiratory wellness, and a peaceful salt cave environment designed for both adults and children. The spa describes itself as a holistic respiratory wellness center and family-friendly wellness space centered around natural salt therapy experiences.
What surprised us most during our visit was how family-friendly the experience actually felt.
What Is Salt Therapy?
Halotherapy, commonly referred to as salt therapy, involves relaxing in a specially designed salt room while pharmaceutical-grade dry salt particles are dispersed into the air through a halogenerator system. According to the spa, these microscopic salt particles are designed to help support respiratory wellness, relaxation, and overall well-being naturally.
The salt rooms are designed to replicate the microclimate of natural salt caves and mines, creating a calming atmosphere filled with soft lighting, salt-covered walls, comfortable recliners, and a warm, peaceful ambiance.
Sessions typically last about 45 minutes, giving families a chance to truly unplug and slow down together.
A Surprisingly Kid Friendly Experience
While many wellness spaces feel geared strictly toward adults, we loved how welcoming the environment felt for families.
Inside the family wellness room, our kids were able to play in the salt with toys while we relaxed nearby in recliner chairs. The salt-covered floor almost creates a sensory-play environment, giving children something tactile and calming to explore while parents unwind.
The experience felt cozy and peaceful from start to finish, with comfortable recliners, soft lighting, hot tea, and light snacks available to enjoy during our visit. It gave the entire space a calming, wellness-focused atmosphere that felt relaxing for both kids and adults.
The dim lighting, peaceful environment, and quieter atmosphere made the experience feel incredibly refreshing compared to many overstimulating indoor activities.
The spa even features a dedicated “Family Wellness Room” specifically designed to accommodate children and family sessions.
For parents, it honestly felt refreshing to find an activity where everyone could relax together for once.

What the Salt Room Looks Like
The moment you walk into the salt room, the atmosphere feels calming and serene. Salt lines the floors and walls, while soft lighting and comfortable lounge chairs create a cozy environment designed for relaxation.
Families can sit back and relax, chat quietly, meditate, or simply enjoy a slower-paced experience together.
