Southfield Public Library Visitor’s Guide and Photos

What I love about the Detroit Metro area is we have a plethora of amazing free spaces to take our children. When places are easily accessible and surrounded by other fun things to do, I call that a WIN-WIN! The Southfield Public Library is one of those such places.  Located at 26300 Evergreen Road in Southfield, it is literally 2 minutes off of 696.

What is Unique about the Southfield Public Library?

My kids like to call this library the “Dragon Library” because of the big friendly dragon who lives in the den.  They can crawl in to see him sleeping and his snoring can be heard all throughout the children’s section.

The whimsical “Once upon a time” theme is fun and appealing to all ages. There is a giant book welcoming visitors into the picture book section and a huge throne made out of replicas of classic tales. This chair is a favorite for our family to curl up and read together.

Another great place to read is in the tree.  Yes, a tree in the library!  There are comfy chairs right outside of it where parents can sit and still see inside at their little ones reading or playing.

Fun seating options

Throughout the entire children’s section, there are plenty of places to sit, read, and work.  There are 2 early literacy computers, most suitable for ages 3-5, right outside of the tree.  There are rows and rows of computers for use with a library card or computer pass, and there is a computer lab too!

The librarians were very helpful and friendly during our most recent visit, and even though we are Berkley residents, and have a Berkley Public Library card, we were still able to check out books from here.

The Secret Garden

One of the things that make this library so unique is the outside garden. Anytime the library is open, so is the “Secret Garden” outside. There are sculptures, flowers, plants, as well as seating.

When you are finished visiting the library, there is a pretty awesome park in the same complex, with nature trails too!
