One of the holiday season’s highlights is experiencing The Polar Express, whether by watching the beloved film or, for Michigan families, riding the real thing! Southeastern Michigan is home to the North Pole Express, hosted by the Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso, featuring Locomotive Steam Engine 1225—the same train used as the model for the iconic Polar Express in the movie. Complete with sound effects and the legendary number 1225, this journey is a holiday tradition perfect for creating lasting memories.
The North Pole Express departs from Owosso, where families receive souvenir tickets and board the historic train for a 4.5-hour adventure that includes a two-hour stop in Ashley, Michigan. In the Village of Ashley, families enter a Christmas wonderland, with elves roaming the town, hot soup kitchens, candy cane makers, and, of course, Santa! This year, guests are encouraged to wear pajamas or vintage 1940s/50s attire, enhancing the nostalgic journey. Santa will be on hand to meet children, and one lucky child will receive the first gift of Christmas.
New for 2024: Tickets are currently sold out, and there is no waiting list. However, you can check the official website for any returned tickets. To avoid scams, please purchase tickets only through the Steam Railroading Institute’s official site and be wary of third-party sellers. If tickets sell out, visitors can still experience the magic of Ashley’s Country Christmas by purchasing an admission button, giving access to the festivities without the train ride.
The North Pole Express offers five different seating classes, each providing a unique experience. From vintage coaches to historic cabooses, each class includes complimentary admission to Ashley’s Country Christmas, a souvenir ticket, and a “Believe” bell. Please review class options before booking to ensure the best experience. Note that the vintage train cars are not ADA accessible, so passengers should be comfortable navigating stairs.
