Last week, I had the opportunity to attend Meta’s Screen Smart event in Chicago at Morgan Manufacturing – and if you’re a parent of a teen (or even a soon-to-be teen), this is information you’re going to want to understand.
The event brought together creators, parents, and safety experts to talk about something we’re all navigating in real time – how to keep kids safe on social media without completely removing them from it.
Because let’s be honest… social media isn’t going anywhere.
What is changing, though, is how platforms like Instagram are trying to build in more protection for teens and more control for parents.
Here’s what I learned, and what every parent should know.

Why Teen Safety Is Such a Big Focus Right Now
If it feels like you’ve been hearing more about teen safety and social media lately, you’re not imagining it.
Between growing concerns about mental health, screen time, and exposure to harmful content, platforms like Instagram are under pressure to do more – and to do it quickly.
Meta’s Screen Smart initiative is part of that push.
The goal?
👉 Make social media safer for teens without expecting parents to figure it all out on their own.

What Is a “Teen Account” on Instagram?
One of the biggest updates shared at the event was Instagram’s rollout of Teen Accounts.
This means that when a teen joins Instagram, they are automatically placed into a more protected version of the app.
Here’s what that includes:
- Accounts are private by default
- Messaging is limited to people they know
- Sensitive content is automatically filtered
- Strangers have restricted access to interact
👉 The biggest takeaway here is that these protections are no longer optional – they’re built in from the start.

What Parents Can Control (Without Being Overbearing)
Another major focus of the event was giving parents tools that feel helpful, not invasive.
Through Instagram’s Family Center, parents can:
- Set daily screen time limits
- Schedule downtime (like no notifications overnight)
- See who their teen is messaging (not the content, just the connections)
- Approve or deny changes to safety settings
It’s designed to give parents visibility, while still allowing teens some independence.
Parents can explore and set up these features directly through Instagram’s Family Center, which walks you step-by-step through screen time limits, supervision tools, and safety settings.
New Safety Alerts Parents Should Know About
This was one of the more eye-opening features discussed.
Instagram is rolling out alerts that notify parents if their teen may be engaging with sensitive or potentially harmful content, including searches related to self-harm.
Parents can receive:
- Notifications
- Resources
- Guidance on how to start conversations
👉 This is less about monitoring and more about creating an opportunity to step in when it matters most.

Can Teens Get Around These Restrictions?
This is the question every parent is really asking.
And yes – it was addressed.
If a teen tries to create a new account and lie about their age, Instagram isn’t just taking their word for it anymore.
The platform now uses technology to look at:
- How the account behaves
- Who they interact with
- Their network of followers and friends
If something doesn’t add up, the account can be flagged as likely belonging to a teen.
Instagram Age Verification Process Explained
If Instagram suspects a user misrepresented their age, they may be required to verify it before continuing to use the platform fully.
Verification methods may include:
- Uploading a government ID
- Submitting a video selfie for age estimation
- Asking mutual connections to confirm their age
If the user cannot verify they are an adult, the account may be:
- Placed into a Teen Account
- Restricted
- Or removed
👉 This makes it significantly harder for teens to bypass safety settings by creating new accounts.

What Surprised Me Most
Going into this event, I expected to hear about a few updates.
What surprised me most was just how much is already happening behind the scenes to further teen safety.
- Protections are automatic
- AI is being used to identify underage users
- Parents have more tools than ever before
It’s clear Instagram is trying to shift from being reactive to being proactive.
But Here’s the Honest Reality
Even with all of these updates…
No system is perfect.
Teens are smart.
Technology evolves.
And there will always be ways around restrictions.
Which is why every expert at the event emphasized the same thing:
👉 These tools are a starting point, not the only solution.
What Parents Should Know About Instagram Teen Safety
Even with all of these updates, the biggest takeaway from the Screen Smart event was this:
Technology alone is not the solution.
Instagram’s tools can:
- Reduce exposure to harmful content
- Limit interactions with strangers
- Provide helpful alerts
But they cannot replace:
Ongoing parental involvement
Open conversations
Clear boundaries
Final Thoughts
Attending Meta’s Screen Smart event gave me a much clearer picture of where social media safety is headed.
It’s not about eliminating social media from our kids’ lives.
It’s about creating safer spaces within it, and giving parents the tools to stay involved without feeling overwhelmed.
While these tools are helpful, creating balance offline is just as important – explore our favorite Metro Detroit playgrounds to get kids moving and off their screens.
