Detroit Zoo Boo 2026: Trick-or-Treating, Animals and Halloween Fun

Looking for a family-friendly Halloween event in Metro Detroit? Detroit Zoo Boo is back for 2026 with trick-or-treating, Halloween decorations, live entertainment, animal viewing and even more time to explore the Detroit Zoo.

One of the biggest changes this year is the new day-to-dusk format. Zoo Boo now opens at 3 p.m., giving families the option to arrive early for animals and the new Fred and Barbara Erb Discovery Trails, come later for the Halloween festivities, or stay for the whole experience.

Here is everything families need to know before visiting!

Trick-or-Treating at Detroit Zoo Boo

Of course, one of the biggest reasons kids love Zoo Boo is the trick-or-treating!

Kids are encouraged to dress in costume and make their way through trick-or-treat stations located throughout the Zoo. Select stations also offer allergen-friendly treat options (and even a treat for adults!)

Beyond the treats, the Zoo is decked out for Halloween with festive decorations, glowing displays and plenty of fun photo opportunities for families.

Entertainment and Activities

Detroit Zoo Boo is much more than trick-or-treating.
Families can find entertainment throughout the event, including fire and aerial performers, the Top Hat Side Show, Spooky Science activities, character encounters and a talking pumpkin!

As the sun goes down, the atmosphere changes with glowing Halloween displays and nighttime entertainment throughout the area.
Depending on the night, kids may also spot familiar characters such as superheroes, princesses and mystery pups.

Come Early, Come Late or Stay for the Whole Thing

One of the nice things about the new format is that families can plan the experience around their own schedules.
Come early if you have younger children, want more daylight or want plenty of time to see animals and explore the Erb Discovery Trails.
Come later if your family is mainly interested in trick-or-treating, performers, characters and the glowing nighttime atmosphere.
Or stay for the whole thing and experience Zoo Boo from day to dusk.

We arrived around 5 p.m., which gave us time to explore the Erb Discovery Trails, see some animals and grab something to eat before enjoying the nighttime festivities.

Tips for Visiting Detroit Zoo Boo With Kids

If seeing animals and exploring the Erb Discovery Trails are priorities, plan to arrive earlier in the afternoon so you have time before full Zoo access ends at 6 p.m.

Costumes are part of the fun, but keep Michigan’s October weather in mind when planning what kids will wear. Layers and comfortable walking shoes can make a big difference during a longer Zoo visit!

If you want the full day-to-dusk experience, arriving in the late afternoon gives you a chance to enjoy the Zoo while it is still light outside and watch the atmosphere change as evening arrives.
