PuppetART Theater and Museum

PuppetART is located in the heart of Detroit’s Theater District, surrounded by the Michigan Opera Theater, Music Hall, and the Gem and Century Theaters.  The Center accommodates an audience of up to 70, hosts a museum of puppets and features various puppetry workshops. Performances are every Saturday at 2 p.m. and occasionally a Thursday performance at 10 a.m.

Suggested ages for performances range so be sure to check before you go. Current admission prices for shows are $10 for adults, $5 for children and $8 per project for the workshops. PuppetART is located at 25 East Grand River in Detroit. Check their website for current show information: http://www.puppetart.org. If you visit on a Thursday, be sure to park in the Compuware building parking lot, then enjoy lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe after the performance. You will receive 15% off your lunch (with your discount coupon from PuppetART) and you get free parking.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the owners and invited to look around the lobby and museum areas.  There was plenty to see.  Rosa was fascinated by all the different puppets that were on display.  The owner spent quite a bit of time talking about Detroit’s role in the puppetry movement and explained in detail many of the displays in the museum.

We sat down to watch Sleeping Beauty.  The story was set to music and the puppets moved with grace about the stage.  It was amazing to see how talented the puppeteers were in the movement and choreography of the puppets.  At the outset, this was not Rosa’s cup of tea.  She was restless and didn’t want to stay.  She moved, wiggled, sat down, stood up, jumped around, talked and was just plain obnoxious.  (My apologies to the other guests.)  But, she finally settled down and watched the show.

The show was about an hour which was just a few minutes too long for Rosa, but she’s only two.  It would be great for children three and up.  After the show concluded, the owner returned to the front of the room and asked a few questions and explained a few of their interpretations in the show.
