Lafayette Greens Urban Garden – The Greening of Detroit
A few weeks ago my cousin and her family came to Michigan. We spent a few days exploring Detroit. We at lunch at one of the famous Coney Island restaurants. Then we happened upon the Lafayette Greens Urban Garden. The urban garden and green space is located at 132 West Lafayette, situated right off Michigan, Shelby, and Lafayette, directly across the street from Westin Book Cadillac Hotel. The Greening of Detroit maintains this serene urban green space.
Lafayette Greens is a great place to sit back and relax. There is plenty to explore in this space. We easily spent ninety minutes here, and our girls didn’t want to leave. Visitor can read a book, enjoy lunch, meditate, even participate in seasonal educational programming. Our girls enjoyed smelling all the flowers, watching the bees, playing with the pinwheels, looking at the artwork, they even used the pathways for a game of Pac-Man.
This award-winning garden, created by Kenneth Weikal Landscape Architecture, was donated to The Greening of Detroit by Compuware in 2014. Each year the gardens host chemical-free vegetables, fruits, flower, and herbs. Local food pantries and churches, as well as volunteers, receive harvested items from the gardens.
Rows upon rows of raised garden beds display beautiful and fragrant flowers. This year (2019), the garden is focusing on flowering plants and pollinator education. They will be offering classes about butterflies, bees and so much more.
In addition to education, guests can visit the gardens and participate in weekly community yoga classes, listen to live music or enjoy the art installments about the gardens. It is a truly amazing community space in the heart of downtown Detroit.
Along with maintaining Lafayette Greens Urban Garden, The Greening of Detroit offers many other programs for the Detroit community such as forestry, tree nursery, landscape services, and stormwater management.
