How to Keep Your Family’s Water As Clean As Possible

When it comes to keeping your family happy and healthy, chances are your home’s water system isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. However, your home’s tap water may not be as great as you think it is. How can you be sure your family is only getting the best possible water? Here are a few ways to keep your water as clean as possible.

Schedule a Backflow Test

The four primary sources of contamination are biological, chemical, physical, and cross-contamination. Old or damaged sewer lines or pipeline clogs can cause bacteria to back up in the waterline, making your drains and water stink. Fortunately, there’s a way you can determine whether your plumbing system needs maintenance and repair: backflow testing. Backflow testing is a simple and affordable way to check for problems in your waterline so you can feel confident knowing your water is clean and your pipes are in good shape.

Install a Water Filter

Water filters are one of the easiest ways you can feel more secure about the water you and your family are drinking. You can either get a filtration system that installs right on the faucet, a pitcher that filters your water as you pour it in, or a whole-home filtration system. Larger ultrapure water systems typically use a process called continuous electrodeionization, which purifies water on an atomic level.

Keep Up to Date With Local Water Information

Your town, city, and county typically keep a detailed record of water information in your area so you can stay up-to-date with any news on things like potential contaminants, plumbing repairs, and more. You can also stay updated on water-related legislation in your local area to see what’s being done to improve your local water quality. More than 3,500 pieces of legislation, including those related to local water systems, are introduced in each General Assembly.

Don’t Pour the Wrong Things Down the Drain

Another easy way you can protect your home’s water system is to prevent clogs from forming in your own sewer lines. Clogs can form for many different reasons, but one common reason is that something went down the sink or drain that shouldn’t have. Avoid pouring grease, especially bacon grease, down the sink when you’re done cooking. Olive oil, canola oil, and vegetable oil can also be harmful. Avoid putting coffee grounds, pasta, and rice in your garbage disposal as well. All of these items can lead to clogs, which can cause bacterial build-up in your sewer line.

Keeping your home’s water in great shape is important both for your health and the health of your family. Try out some of the tips above to help keep your water fresh and clean.
