Planet D Nonet
September 15th, 2022- 7:00pm

Planet D Nonet is “a down & dirty little swing band from Detroit” was founded by drummer RJ Spangler and trumpeter James O’Donnell. The Planet D Nonet is about swing, blues, space-age jazz and classic American songs all served with plenty of good humor with an eye toward turning people onto this kind of music.

Exploring Musical Compsition for Youth
Sepember 17th, 2022- Grades 4-6: 11:00am-12:00pmGrades 7-12: 1:00pm-2:30pm

In this fun-filled composition workshop for youth, local composer and educator, Alan Oliphant, will give a brief introduction to the world of musical composition. Alan will help to demystify the process, offer some basic tips and tools, and give youth the opportunity to compose their own pieces. Come make music at the Hawk!

The Whiskey Charmers

Musical Composition for Adults

In this fun-filled composition lecture and workshop for adults, local composer and educator, Alan Oliphant, will offer an introduction to the world of musical composition. Alan will help to demystify the process, discuss the steps that a composer uses to write a piece of music, talk about beginning music theory and offer basic tips and tools. The audience will have the opportunity to compose piece of music that evening with Alan. Come make music at the Hawk!

How to Be Funny 101

October 1st, 2022- 7:00pm

Mark Boyd spent most of the 80s and 90s, 48 weeks per year, performing in comedy venues, and a few not-so-comedy venues, all across the United States and Canada. He appeared on several comedy showcase programs on television, such as “Evening at the Improv.” Join him for a night of slightly-educational fun! What could be better than practicing public speaking and some of your corniest jokes in front of a room full of strangers?! Let Mark teach you the tips and tools of the trade in this casual lecture and night of free-spirited fun! 18 and up. Beer and wine will definitely be available!

Literary Artist Series: Stephen Mack Jones

Award-winning author and playwright Stephen Mack Jones will join us for an insightful evening to discuss his process and work including critically-acclaimed books August Snow, Lives Laid Away and Dead of Winter. He will be joined by Award-Winning Detroit Free Press columnist and Farmington Hills resident Neal Rubin where these two Farmington Hills residents will give us an informal peek into Stephen’s literary adventures. 

Chamber Soloists of Detroit

Reflections and Funaach Present SANGEET NIGHT- A WEDDING STORY

Antiques Twelve Mile Road Show

Jamie Thompson of Carriage House Antiques, antique and estate specialists from nearby Perrysburg, will join us for a fun, free-spirited lecture. Ara Topouzian
October 23rd, 2022- 4:00pm

Ara Topouzian was the 2015 Farmington Hills Artist-in-Residence. An Armenian-American musician whose proficiency at the Kanun (Middle Eastern harp) has made him a nationally-recognized artist, Ara has performed at concerts and music festivals across the United States. This 2012 Kresge Artist’s traditional music style keeps to his Armenian heritage but has expanded to include music from around the Middle East with jazz, fusion, and new age influences.**The day’s events will also include a family-friendly exploration of Armenian culture from 2-4pm.

Farmington Concert Band- Halloween Concert

Sheila Landis presents A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald

Sheila Landis is a Detroit Music Awards Seven-Time “Outstanding Jazz Vocalist” Winner. Landis is a true jazz singer who’s not afraid to scat-sing and bend a blue note, recalling the sheer joy of the vocal art in the style of the legendary Ella Fitzgerald, “The First Lady of Song”. Seven-string guitarist Rick Matle, Oakland University Music Performance Graduate, and various drummers selected from a roster of talented Detroit-area percussionists complete the trio, providing swinging support. 

Detroit Metropolitian Youth Symphony

Since 1982 the Detroit Metropolitan Youth Symphony has developed students from nearly 50 metro-Detroit communities. Join us at the Hawk for a showcase of some of the region’s best young talent in four orchestras of students grades 2-12 ranging from advanced beginning strings to the DMYS flagship full Symphony Orchestra.

Farmington Swing Band: Swing into the Holidays

Emma Guzman
December 10th, 2022- 7:00pm

Singer-songwriter Emma Guzman is a known cat enthusiast, rumored star child and has always been compelled to express herself through music. Choosing to spend her time humming melodies and frantically scribbling lyrics in various notebooks and on random scraps of paper, she has quietly amassed a substantial collection of songs. She was described by the Detroit Metro Times as a “songwriting prodigy,” and one of their top 15 artists to watch in 2016.

The Farmington Chorus Winter Concert

The Farmington Chorus was established in 1980 under the sponsorship of the Farmington Hills Parks and Recreation Department as an activity for community residents. They have been performing Holiday and Spring Concerts ever since.

O’Brien and Flick
January 7th, 2023- 7:00pm

Hannah O’Brien and Grant Flick play a mix of original compositions and traditional pieces from
various fiddling traditions. The duo began collaborating at University of Michigan School of
Music, Theatre, & Dance in 2019. They found common ground despite coming from different
backgrounds with Hannah from Irish fiddling and Grant from American improvisational idioms. In August 2021 they released their first duo record, “Windward.” This album features a collection of their original tunes but also some of their takes on fiddling standards. Their arrangements have been worked up without notation and sometimes incorporate improvised sections. While the duo feels at home on double fiddle, they also change instrumentation often incorporating tenor guitar and nyckelharpa. Their musical interests are broad and as a result their programs showcase an eclectic assemblage of repertoire.

Richard O’Neil and Pauline Martin
January 15th, 2023- 2:00pm

Emmy and Grammy-winning violist Richard O’Neil joins us on the Hawk Mainstage for a truly magical afternoon of music. Joined by pianist, Pauline Martin, they will perform a program of gems of the repertoire including Rachmaninoff’s seminal Cello Sonata performed on viola.

Lunar New Year Concert with Xiao Dog Wei

January 22nd, 2023- 7:00pm

At the age of 11, Xiao Dong Wei was accepted into the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing where she was granted the degree of Master of the Erhu. A 2012 Kresge Artist, she has appeared as a soloist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. She has been featured on National Public Radio and has produced multiple critically-acclaimed albums. Xiao Dong Wei is a lecturer at the University of Michigan and her music can be heard all around the world.
The day’s events will also include a family-friendly Lunar New Year celebration.

It’s never too late to try your hand at something new! Join Robin Bloomberg and come fiddle around at the Hawk! Robin will give a fun, informal talk about the violin’s history and offer a one-of-a-kind show and tell experience with some unique and rare instruments. You’ll even have a chance to play along and find your inner violinist. No previous experience needed.

Have you ever wished for a bit more hands-on fun at one of those instrument petting zoos? Youth ages eight and up are invited to join Robin Bloomberg for a morning of fun with strings! Participants will have the opportunity to learn some fun facts about stringed instruments, see some rare and one-of-a-kind instruments and even learn to play a little song on the violin. No previous experience needed.

Greater Alexander

Three Men and a Tenor
Feburary 25th, 2023- 8:00pm

Great pop vocal music, quick-witted humor, and overall likeability make THREE MEN and a TENOR a unique vocal music and comedy show experience that cannot be matched. The group has over 3,000 performances together, a national touring schedule, and has opened shows for national legends like Jay Leno and The Beach Boys and starred in their own national PBS-TV special “Three Men and a Tenor- In Concert” that was shown across the country from Los Angeles to Nashville on major PBS affiliates.

3MT was voted “The Best Entertainment in Michigan” 4-times. THREE MEN and a TENOR has regularly sold-out shows at performing arts centers, theatres, and festivals and fairs for nearly 30-years with a powerful blend of vocal harmonies and feel-good music for all ages.

Steve Taylor Acoustic

Community Sing-Along*

Detroit Retro Society
April 1st, 2023- 7:30pm

The top-tier Detroit music revue, Detroit Retro Society, performs the music that makes Motown so special. Musicians in the Detroit Retro Society have shared the stage with everyone from classic acts like The Temptations, Parliament Funkadelic, Foreigner and Aretha Franklin to modern acts like Sturgill Simpson, Kid Rock, and Griz. This high-energy performance will get you on your feet and dancing all night long!

Ray Ureña

April 13th, 2023- 7:00pm

Ray Ureña is not only a talented guitarist, but a multi-instrumentalist whose career span includes touring, playing festivals, film scoring, and electronic music production. Though his music education is rooted and jazz, his work as a guitar sideman has landed many gigs opening for Bare Naked Ladies, Eddie Money, The Spin Doctors, Everclear, Robert Bradley, and Kid Rock. 

Xiao Dong Wei and Friends

The Ehnes Quartet Returns

Formally established in 2010, the Ehnes Quartet’s highly refined, sensitive and expressive performances have delighted audiences and critics across the globe and have made them one of the most sought after chamber groups performing today. Hailed as “an important new force in the chamber music arena” with a “dream-team line-up” (Strings), the Ehnes Quartet is comprised of four internationally renowned string musicians: violinists James Ehnes and Amy Schwartz Moretti, and cellist Edward Arron. For this concert they are joined by violist Matthew Lipman.
Known for his virtuosity and probing musicianship, violinist James Ehnes has performed in 37 countries on five continents, appearing regularly in the world’s great concert halls and with the most celebrated orchestras and conductors. His recordings have been honored with many international awards and prizes, including a Grammy. James was recently named Gramaphone Magazine’s 2021 “Artist of the Year.” He plays the “Marsick” Stradivarius of 1715.

Eat It Up Trio

Detroit-based and undeniably swinging, The Eat It Up Trio is Michigan’s premier professional purveyor of possibly the most pleasurable music three humans can safely perform within the parameters of the law. Comprised of drummer Sean Perlmutter, bassist Trevor Lamb, and pianist/vocalist Mike Harrison, the Eat It Up trio delivers original songs and arrangements with a versatile repertoire spanning from traditional jazz to modern R&B, funk to folk country, classic rock to bebop, and all the cracks and crevices in between.
