Staying Fit! Where To Go Swimming In Detroit During The Fall & Winter

indoor swimming detroit winter

With fall right around the corner, cold weather is soon to follow. But that doesn’t mean that the fall and winter seasons will take away your ability to swim. Did you know this active hobby is the fourth most popular recreational activity in the United States? If this activity was solely limited to the short months of summer, there’s no way it would be at the top of the charts. So how can you go swimming in Detroit during the winter and fall seasons? Luckily, there are plenty of indoor swimming pools for you to flaunt your mermaid-like skills in Detroit.

After you close up your own pool, here are some of the top locations to visit so you — and your family — can swim all year long. Keep reading to learn where to go swimming in Detroit no matter the season.

Community pools

Detroit is home to a number of community pools, both indoor and outdoor. When the cold months of winter rear their head, these indoor options are a saving grace for water lovers. Here are some of the pools you can visit this year:

  • Goldfish Swim Schools: Enjoy the pool during open swim hours at your local Goldfish Swim School.  The pool hosts plenty of space to swim, toys, private changing rooms, hairdryers, and many more amenities.  $5.00/swimmer maximum $15/family.
  • The Clarkston Community Swim: While open swim is not available, Clarkston Community Schools offers a number of recreational programs, including swimming classes. Take a look at their fall flyer to get more information about their swim team, the Oakland Live Y’ers (OLY). This online resource is also good for tracking school closings and registering for other community events. Visit their location at 6093 Flemings Lake Road in Clarkston.
  • Dexter Community Pool: At only $3 per person, this indoor pool is a steal. You can also opt for the $15 family pack or pay nothing for children under the age of two. Check out their pool at 3060 Kensington St., Dexter
  • Mack Indoor Pool: As the only public indoor pool in Ann Arbor, this affordable option only costs $5 for adults and $4 for children between the ages of four and 17. You can sign up for some of their swimming classes or rest easy knowing that your kids are safe in the tots pool for children. Best of all? This pool is heated. Who said pools are only for cooling down? Visit their location at 715 Brooks St., Ann Arbor.
  • Macomb Township Recreation Center Pools: Whether you’re looking for an open swim, aerobics classes, a lazy river, or a whirlpool, this pool has it all. Prices range from $5 to $10 per day, making this the perfect weekend getaway for children and adults alike. Sign up for classes online or visit their facility at 20699 Macomb St., Macomb Township.

Water parks

While community pools are great for general exercise and a little lazy fun, the real thrill comes from Michigan’s collection of indoor water parks. If you’re willing to plan a family road trip, there are a ton of indoor water parks in Michigan.

So even though some of the following water parks are a short drive away, they will be well worth a day of summer fun in the middle of winter. If you’re ready to revel and romp in the water, check out some of these water parks:

  • Avalanche Bay at Boyne Mountain: This 88,000 sq ft facility is the largest water playground in Michigan. Spend the day traversing the park’s hot tubs, surf pool, and five (count ’em: five) water slides. For tuckered-out parents, you can rest easy at the Solace Spa right around the corner. There’s no better way to cool down after shredding the ski slopes than tackling the park’s lazy river.
  • The Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City: At 38,000 square feet, this park offers ample amounts of fun in the form of eight waterslides, five pools, and an indoor treehouse. Even if you’re not a fan of the water, you can also spend all day exploring the kids’ spa, playing Magiquest, or finding your favorite meal at the local restaurants.  Read about our experience at Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City.
  • Soaring Eagle Water Park and Hotel at Mt. Pleasant: This water park sports more than an acre of family fun. Hosting more than 240 rooms that can accommodate up to seven people at a time, you can rest easy with the whole family (and maybe some of your extended family). Spend some time away from the kids in the adults’ pool or join your young ones on the body slide.

Are you ready to hold onto a bit of summer? Pools that feature glass surfaces can last almost indefinitely, whether it’s hot or cold. If your family loves spending time underwater, then you can still enjoy swimming all year long with these indoor options.
