Chartreuse Liqueur

The name of the restaurant is Chartreuse, so one would be remiss to not at least consider trying the namesake liqueur. Chartreuse is a French herbal liqueur which comes in many varieties, however the yellow and green are the most popular. Green Chartreuse is made from 130 herbs and plants with a 110 proof and has a fresh citrus flavor with hints of mint and pine. Yellow Chartreuse is 80 proof, and offers a sweeter and milder fresh citrus flavor with hints of turmeric and anise.

The “Last Word” is an amazing crisp, light, cocktail with a lime flavor featuring #chartreusegreen, citadelle gin, maraschino and lime. This drink was first introduced at the Detroit Athletic Club. It was featured in a souvenir menu that dates back to 1916. Love the Detroit history !!!

In addition to the “Last Word” Chartreuse also offers “Spring Water” cocktail featuring chartreuse yellow and luksosowa vodka, along with pickle brine, ginger and lime.

Chartreuse Kitchen and Cocktails Menu

The Menu at Chartreuse Detroit is ever changing based on the local in-season foods. You can count on a wide variety of plant forward dishes that include lighter meals at the top of the menu, followed by heavier meals at the bottom. When you visit, it is best if you plan to share your plates. That way you can try more of the menu. They suggest that you order two plates per person, depending on your appetite and your selections.

They offer dinner items as well as desserts. In addition to non-alcoholic selections, Chartreuse offers a full bar experience, so no matter your mood or taste, they will have the perfect drink for you.

Our Experience

During our experience we tried two of the drinks in addition to four dinner plates and dessert. Everything we sampled was delicious.

The “Last Word” (pictured below) is an amazing crisp, light, cocktail with a lime flavor featuring #chartreusegreen, citadelle gin, maraschino and lime. This drink was first introduced at the Detroit Athletic Club and was featured in a souvenir menu that dates back to 1916.

The “Twice Cooked Egg” (pictures above) comes on a bed of werp farms’ greens, and brussel sprouts with a warm shallot vinaigrette, topped with salty cheese. An amazing dish to start. We loved the sweet vinaigrette and crispy brussle sprouts.

The Michigan Asparagus was amazing. Featuring romesco, cornbread crumble and crispy garlic, this perfectly cooked dish has a delightful nutty finish.

The Grass Fed New York Strip is a lightly flavored, melt in your mouth, steak cooked medium rare. The dish also featured horseradish semolinea gnocchi cooked to perfection, root vegetables that add the perfect flavor to the dish as well as a dijon creme.

The Bumpy Cake is another Detroit recipe! Originally created in the early 1900’s by Sanders. The Chartreuse version is a rich, moist chocolate cake with flavorful decadent vanilla buttercream served on milk jam and topped with crispy chocolate feuiletine. A great way to end the meal.

We also tried the Madagascar Vanilla Pudding which features basil syrup, blueberries, bourbon chantilly and rosemary cookies. The light, refreshing flavors were delightful and are a stark contrast to the Bumpy Cake.
