Visit The Sojourner Truth Institute. When teaching about the history of slavery and the Underground Railroad, Sojourner Truth is a name that comes up many times in regards to slave rights. Battle Creek, Michigan was her final resting place and as such, you will find tons of information at this volunteer-run location. It’s ideal for learning more about the impact she had on slave and women’s rights.
Visit Kingman Museum. This museum is full of not only the history of Battle Creek but the history of Michigan. Not only is there state and local history to be seen, but there is a wonderful planetarium that is ideal for educational field trips for a science class. There is a great natural history museum, and tons of information on the local area to enjoy and use in your homeschool classroom.
Visit the Historic Adventist Village. If you are studying religion or regional religious studies, you’ll learn that the Seventh Day Adventist Church had a huge role in the city of Battle Creek. The Historic Adventist Village is a great place to walk through and learn more about the history of the church in the area and what they represented to the growth of the community.
Visit Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center: This was formerly known as the Battle Creek Sanitarium and well known for treating many individuals through history. You can still visit the building and grounds but must have proper ID to do so. The famous Battle Creek Sanitarium is well known for being part of the Adventist health regimen in the area and was a location many visited for health reasons. Former presidents, famous person, and military have all spent time in this sanitarium at various points.
Visit Cornwell’s Turkeyville. Just outside the city of Battle Creek is Cornwell’s Turkeyville. This fun destination is open year round, but the real excitement comes in the warmer months when there are often flea markets, festivals, and craft exhibits. Taking the kids out to visit is a great way for them to learn about how Turkey’s are raised at the location, but also a fun side trip with tons of outdoor activities. Kids will enjoy some fresh ice cream or a turkey sandwich after playing outside and taking a tour of the grounds. Adults might prefer the afternoon and evening dinner theater options that are tons of fun for the whole family.
