Wayne County Parks to Celebrate 25 Years of Lightfest Tradition!

Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans and Wayne County Parks invites the public to attend the Lights On ceremony celebrating the opening of the Wayne County Lightfest on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 6:00 p.m. at Merriman Hollow Park located at 7651 Merriman Road in Westland.

2018 marks the quarter-century anniversary for the Wayne County Lightfest. The Lightfest’s magical four-mile stretch of Hines Park, displays nearly 50 animated themed displays and more than 100,000 lights. Among the attractions planned for the Lights On ceremony will be musical entertainment provided by Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit, a commemorative fireworks show, and an appearance by Santa. The ceremony will conclude with Executive Evans turning on the switch to kick off the traditional first drive of the 25th annual Lightfest. The week will also include the annual Wayne County Lightfest 8K Fun Run/Walk on Tuesday, November 13 at 7:00 p.m. and the Bike through the Lights 16K on Wednesday, November 14 at 7:00 p.m.

“It’s our 25th year and we are once again elated to host this celebrated tradition,” said Executive Evans. “As we officially kick off the holiday season, I look forward to seeing the many smiles and pure excitement from our Lightfest visitors.”

Returning this year is Santa’s Workshop from Nov. 15 until Dec. 23 in Warrendale Park. Families have the option of visiting Santa or dropping off a letter in the giant mailbox. Also returning are Toy Nights on Nov. 27, Dec. 4, 11 and 18 where visitors can donate a new unwrapped toy in lieu of paying the entrance fee.

In 1993, the Wayne County Park System, in order to provide a winter recreation program and to offset impending budget cuts, initiated a holiday light show fund raiser. When the Lightfest began in 1993, it was actually called “The Festival of Lights.” Over time, the name has changed to the Wayne County Lightfest and a 8k run/walk, bike event and grand opening ceremony have been added to the festivities.

The Lightfest runs from Nov. 15 through Dec. 31, with a closure on Sunday, Dec. 25. The cost per vehicle is $5 cash. Visitors enter Lightfest at Hines Drive and Merriman Road in Westland and exit onto Warren Avenue near Telegraph Road in Dearborn Heights.
