My Smart Hands Comes to Metro Detroit

Teaching American Sign Language (ASL) to a hearing baby was once viewed as a fad, but parents now realize it is a valuable tool for communication with their children. Studies show hearing children who use ASL tend to have larger vocabularies, higher IQ scores, and learn to read sooner. My Smart Hands of Metro Detroit now teaches baby sign language classes to parents and children around the Metro Area.

Parents all over the world now see the value in giving their pre-verbal baby a way to communicate their needs to them through the use of sign language. This parental interest in baby sign language is clearly shown through the number of views our My Smart Hands baby signing video has received, it is now over 3.2 million views.

"I am very honored to be part of this internationally recognized and award winning educational company.” says Marie Konwinski, owner and certified instructor, My Smart Hands of Metro Detroit. "My appreciation for ASL began in childhood. I have a sibling who experienced hearing loss in one of his ears during infancy, which impaired his verbal communication development. We utilized signs to communicate with him and help with speech development, since we then knew what he was trying to say. I can not express enough the many benefits of this valuable tool.”

Many parents fear using sign language with their children will delay speech development, but in fact the opposite is true. Baby sign language reduces frustration, accelerates verbal development, and strengthens cognitive skills. Typically, children have a spoken vocabulary of no more than ten words by the time they are 12 months old. However children have control of their hands, and therefore can use sign language, much earlier. Using ASL with hearing children allows parents to communicate with their children long before their children can speak.

“I believe that our curriculum is the perfect approach to enhancing early language acquisition,” says Konwinski, “and of course to having fun!”

My Smart Hands of Metro Detroit offers 5 or 10-week baby sign language courses to parents and children where participants learn over 100 signs per course, as well as child educator workshops designed to show teachers and child care providers how to use sign language with the children in their care.
